The articles

The articles in spanish helps us to indicate the gender of the noun, as well as the number of nouns.

The articles in spanish

Definite articles

The definite  masculine articles are "el" and "los". The definite feminine articles are "la" and "las".

  • They are used before the noun. 
Me gustan los perros. 
I like the dogs.
  • They are used to refer a definite noun. 

Juanita juega con la muñeca.
Juanita plays with the doll. 


More examples

El carro azul está muy viejo.
The blue car is very old.

Los carros azules están muy viejos.
The blue cars are very old. 

La manzana es roja.
The apple is red.

Las manzanas son rojas.
The apples are red. 


Indefinite articles

The indefinite masculine articles are "un" and "unos". The definite feminine  articles are "una" and "unas".

  • They are used after the verb "Haber". 
Hay unos perros afuera. 
There are some dogs outside.
  • They are used to refer a non definite noun. 

Juanita juega con una muñeca.
Juanita plays with a doll. 


More examples

Un amigo está en la ciudad.
One friend is in the city.

Unos amigos están en la ciudad.
Some friends are in the city. 

Una casa debe estar limpia.
One house must be clean.

Unas casas deben estar limpias. son rojas.
Some houses must be clean.
